Elective Course
The Elective Course is a curriculum-based course available to the girls who enrolled in our program and who attended the GCW retreat. Under the direction of a professional teacher assigned by our partner school, the girls follow a GCW curriculum that is divided in three sections: career exploration, college access and work readiness. Students gain an understanding of economics, both theoretical and practical, and of what industries are growing and in need of employees as well as the skills, training and education required of particular careers.

Above all I want to thank GCW for giving me the opportunity to meet the women working in so many different fields out there, it opened my eyes a lot about opportunities for women and the ability to be successful in various careers. GCW Student Participant
Other sessions cover practical skills such as selecting and applying to colleges, interviewing for a job, resume writing, professional communication, and networking. Overall, girls prepare an education and career action plan by engaging in an in-depth self-assessment to identify strengths and interests, and then matching these to possible career paths and educational opportunities.
As part of the course requirements, the girls create a portfolio that includes a cover letter, a resume, an essay describing their learning experience, and three letters of recommendation that they can include in their college applications. This portfolio is a final product demonstrating the tangible result of the girls' work throughout the course.
